All-Time Lists
This section provides lists of the top performances for all years for standard events from 3000m through 100 km. Standards are the same as for record qualification.
Road
Performances are for courses that are believed to be accurate. Point-to-point courses are defined as those courses whose start and finish lie more than 30% of the race distance apart and/or whose drop exceeds 1 meter per kilometer. If the drop is less than 5 meters per kilometer, performances are considered statistically valid. Such performances are included and have an "a" appended to the time, indicating these are potentially aided performances.
Performances on point-to-point courses whose drop exceeds 5 meters per kilometer are not considered statistically valid and are not included.

Time Bias Adjusted Road Lists
Road courses vary much more widely than do track courses. Road courses often include hills and may be point-to-point, raising the possibilities of a tail wind or head wind markedly affecting times. Road races are held year-round and may be held under inclement weather conditions. In particular, marathons associated with the Olympic Games or the IAAF World Championships are very often conducted under conditions far too warm for optimal marathon performances. This section attempts to adjust for these factors, using the race time bias that has been calculated for many major races. This permits a more realistic comparison of road race performances. It also allows inclusion of performances made on courses later shown to be short.
The race time bias is calculated as the average difference between each runner's actual time and their expected time. This is done for each of the runners in the race that have sufficient data to calculate a linear regression from which their expected times can be determined. Performances within two years of the race are included in the regression. Only road performances meeting record standards and track performances are used in the regression analysis. Outliers are discarded. A minimum of five performances is required for the regression.
These lists provide both the actual and time bias adjusted times. In some cases, there was insufficient data to calculate a reliable race time bias; an attempt has been made based on what limited data is available in these cases, to estimate what the race time bias was and adjust the times accordingly (shown in red). Marks made prior to 1980 have very limited information on which to base the race time bias adjustment and these adjusted times should be regarded as quite tentative.
Abbreviations appended to adjusted and actual times in these lists are as follows:
"a" indicates a point-to-point course
"x" indicates a course that has excessive downhill or is considered to be short
