Notes: The Irish Champion Athletic Club (ICAC) was founded circa 1873, not as a governing body but solely for the purposes of holding a national championship. The inaugural ICAC championships were held in 1873, and two years later a four miles race was added to the programme. After the dissolution of the Irish Champion Athletic Club, the 1881 championships were held under the auspices of an ad hoc committee pending the establishment of a representative national governing body. After the envisaged national governing body failed to materialise, the 1881 and 1882 championships were organised by the Dublin Amateur Athletic Club. After some three years in limbo, two national governing bodies, the Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAC) and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), were established almost concurrently in 1884. The two organisations held separate championships; athletes could, initially at least, compete in both. The mile was the longest track event at the GAA championships until 1895, when a five miles race was included. The National Athletic and Cycling Association of Ireland [NACA] was established in 1924 when Ireland became a member of the IAAF, but was suspended from the IAAF in 1936 for its refusal to accept Britain’s claim to jurisdiction over the northern counties (Northern Ireland). With athletes affiliated to the NACA now barred from international competition, certain clubs then broke away from the NACA and formed a new organisation- the Irish Amateur Athletic Union (IAAU), later renamed Amateur Athletic Union of Eire [AAUE]– which applied for membership of the IAAF and came to a working agreement with the Northern Ireland Amateur Athletic Association (NIAAA) for the fielding of Irish teams for international events. The NACA, with the sympathies of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) solidly behind it, continued to hold the support of the vast majority of clubs in Ireland, but many of the oldest established clubs in Dublin gave their allegiance to the new body. The unsanctioned NACA remained in existence until 1967 when it finally merged with the AAUE to form a new body called Bord Luthchleas na hEireann (BLE), which then was recognised by the IAAF.

Note: A 5000m race was held in 1990 in conjunction with the Irish championships, won by Sonia O'Sullivan in 15:26.9.  It is not clear whether this was a true championship or a non-championship event.
